The Denver Broncos’ starting defensive end Adam Gotsis has been charged with strongarm rape in Atlanta.

A 30-year-old woman told Atlanta police on February 1 that Gotsis raped her five years ago on March 9, 2013, while the player was enrolled at Georgia Tech.

The woman, who has not been named due to the nature of the alleged crimes against her, said she was at a party with Gotsis when he took her to his home and raped her.

The 25-year-old turned himself in on March 7 and was later released on a $50,000 bond, according to Fulton County Jail records.

Gotsis’ attorney, Sara Becker, released a statement Monday denying the allegations and saying the athlete did not know the woman had any issue with their previous interactions until last month.

‘Although the incident in question allegedly occurred more than five years ago, Adam first learned of these shocking accusations last month,’ she said, according to the Denver Post.

‘We immediately reached out to law enforcement and have proactively cooperated with all aspects of the investigation while maintaining communication with the team.

‘While we were disappointed to learn of the turn this investigation was taking, we steadfastly maintain that the allegations are false. We will continue to advocate strongly for Adam’s innocence.’

The Broncos said in a statement Monday that they were aware of allegations, and said it takes accusations of this nature very seriously and will monitor the legal proceedings.

Gotsis was born in Melbourne, Australia and attended Georgia Tech from 2012 to 2015, starting in 37 games during his time at the school.

He was then selected in the second round of the NFL Draft in 2016, but missed most of his rookie season due to injury.

In 2017 he started 13 games for the Broncos at defensive end. He will be subject to potential NFL discipline under the league’s personal conduct policy.
