They were part of a group of four inmates that tried to escape from the oldest section of the main jail at around 11pm on Wednesday, deputies told KTVU-TV.
The other two inmates, whose names were not released, were re-arrested immediately after their failed attempt.
Sheriffs have enlisted the aid of K-9 units and helicopters in the search for the two men.
Law enforcement officials have also set up a perimeter in the San Jose area.
They said that the perimeter of their search runs near the Silicon Valley Turkey Trot, an annual Thanksgiving Day race that draws thousands of runners and spectators, according to KTVU-TV.
Race officials said that the manhunt won’t affect the race, which is already being secured by about 100 police officers.
Chavez was arrested and put in jail on August 17, 2016, on a number of charges, including burglary, extortion, false imprisonment, resisting arrest, and weapons charges.
He is described as a Hispanic male, 6 feet 1 inch tall, weighing 190 pounds, and sporting a facial tattoo above his left eye.
