Deangelo Davis was arrested Tuesday night, but has not been charged.
Rose, a five-year campus police veteran, underwent surgery late on Wednesday night but died from his injuries.
University President M. Roy Wilson said Rose is the only Wayne State officer to ‘fall in the line of duty’.
Wayne State Police Chief Anthony Holt said Wednesday that he does not believe the shooting of officer Rose ‘was an ambush’.
Holt says a suspect is in custody but he has not been charged. Deangelo Davis was named as a person of interest in the case but it is not clear if he is thought to be the shooter.
Holt says no weapon has been recovered and that an investigation is ongoing.

A university police sergeant in Detroit says he had a physical run-in five years ago with the man being held in connection with Rose’s shooting.
Wayne State University Sgt. Cary Glazer said Wednesday he was patrolling around the campus in 2011 when a man walking in the street swore at him and told him to get out of the way. Glazer says he got out of his car and the pair struggled until other officers arrived.
Glazer says the man ‘wanted to fight a police officer’.

The man was charged with resisting and obstructing a police officer after the incident with Glazer.
Wayne State University spokesman Matt Lockwood said Rose graduated from Ferris State University in 2010 and was his fraternity’s president.
He says Rose was involved in cycling and a dog-training club. Rose’s first job as an officer was with the village of Richland and he was a cadet with the New Baltimore Police Department.
Michigan Gov. Rick Snyder and state Attorney General Bill Schuette are offering condolences to fellow officers and the family of Officer Rose.
Schuette said in a statement that Rose ‘was doing his job, serving his community and protecting all of us, when he was tragically gunned down.’
Snyder says Michigan residents are ‘collectively mourning his loss.’
