Meeting his family, friends or co-workers for the first time this holiday season and don’t know what to wear?
You’re not alone! Getting dolled up can be stressful without the added pressure of wanting to win over the inner circle of your significant other.
FEMAIL turned to Emily Holmes Hahn (pictured right), founder of Last First – a bespoke matchmaking club headquartered in Manhattan – for some tips on how to dress to impress (everyone) this season.
1-MEETING THE PARENTS:
Celebrity Inspiration: The daytime outfits of Kate or Pippa Middleton, Taylor Swift and Emma Watson
Family ties: According to Emily, the daytime outfits of Kate or Pippa Middleton, Taylor Swift and Emma Watson are what to emulate when meeting your boo’s family
While the sought after matchmaker is a firm believer in having fun with fashion and being true to your own personal style, Emily also says, ‘it is important to consider where you are going and who you are meeting.’
‘Assume that a new boyfriend’s parents will be more conservative than you, so dress accordingly within your own wardrobe! If you have an idea of his mother’s style, you could look to that for beginning inspiration.’
‘If you’re meeting in a formal setting (i.e. out to dinner, cocktails or at a special event), a silky tea length dress that covers your shoulders is usually a great option.’ says Emily.
‘Cropped/tapered dress pants and a fitted cashmere sweater can work, too. You could do either of these with a kitten or medium height heel (depending on the event and your height/ease in heels!) and a cross-body leather bag.’
‘If you’re meeting in a less formal setting (i.e., dropping by their house one day or going to a park or museum), I love a clean J.Crew inspired look. Try dark jeans and a blazer with riding boots or driving shoes, a nice belt and a monogrammed tote bag.’
‘When in doubt, Google “Kate Middleton jeans” for either a formal or casual ‘meet-the-parents’ look,’ says Emily. ‘Natural, clean, minimally ‘done’ hair and makeup is always the way to go.’
2-MEETING HIS FRIENDS:
Celebrity Inspiration: the “off-duty” looks of Kendall Jenner or Bella Hadid
New buds: ‘To meet his friends at a sports bar, wear something sexy but very casual,’ says Emily. ‘You want to be “one of the guys” but still a girl.’ For inspiration, Emily suggests the off-duty outfits of Kendall Jenner and Bella Hadid
‘To meet his friends at a sports bar, wear something sexy but very casual,’ says Emily. ‘You want to be “one of the guys” but still a girl, if that makes sense!’
For inspiration, supermodel Kendall Jenner is Emily’s go-to. ‘Start off with high waisted skinny jeans or leather pants – ripped jeans are fine (great even!) – as long as they have a snug fit.’
She suggests a flattering top that hips just at or above the pants waistline to elongate the illusion of the legs. ‘I usually advise bare arms (if toned!),’ she says.
If you prefer sleeveless, Emily recommends balancing the look by covering up cleavage and not showing too much tummy. ‘ If you prefer a sleeve, try a lower neckline, with an amazing bra, of course. Accessorize with a beautiful watch or 1-2 pieces of delicate gold jewelry. Finish the look with a medium heeled bootie and a leather jacket to take on and off as needed.’
‘As I advise for almost any date, hair and makeup should be extremely minimal – though one of my favorite tips to stand out under bar lighting is to reapply a facial oil throughout the night for a glow-y and youthful complexion.’
3. MEETING CO-WORKERS AT HIS HOLIDAY PARTY:
Celebrity Inspiration: the cocktail party outfits of Olivia Palermo or Poppy Delevingne
Boss lady: ‘His company holiday party is a chance for you to show off some flirty and feminine style elements,’ says Emily. The matchmaker favors the ensembles of Olivia Palermo and Poppy Delevingne
‘His company holiday party is a chance for you to show off some flirty and feminine style elements,’ says Emily.
‘You can surprise him and keep his eyes on you all night by wearing something stunning in a bold or metallic color that he’s never seen you in before. Definitely go the extra mile to perfect all the details of this outfit in the week leading up to the event, since half the fun will be getting ready, anyway!’
Whether it’s a dress, skirt set or jumpsuit, ‘pick whatever flatters you most and top it with a tailored black blazer for optional warmth and a professional flair. As always, if something is low-cut, go for a slightly more conservative hemline, and if it’s ultra short, go for a high neck,’ says Emily.
‘Avoid casual cotton or any stiff fabrics and opt for a textured satin, lace or velvet. A hint of glitter threading or sequined details is an eye catching way to stand out in the crowd. You’ll want to look festive so sky high heels, trendy jewelry, sleek hair and a smoky eye can all complement the look nicely.’
4-SINGLE AND READY TO MINGLE:
Inspiration: Daytime event outfits of Selena Gomez
All the single ladies: ‘I think you can really set yourself apart with something sexy and slightly more bare than your average winter clothes,’ says Emily. She suggests turning to Selena Gomez’s daytime outfits for influence
Fashion has no thermometer! ‘I think you can really set yourself apart with something sexy and slightly more bare than your average winter clothes, to tastefully flaunt your favorite body parts when others are usually more covered,’ says Emily.
Whatever you choose, ‘you MUST feel like a million dollars in it,’ she stresses. ‘Your confidence and ease are still the things he will notice first.’
‘One of my favorite combinations for winter is a high waisted skirt paired with a long sleeved cropped sweater or top. Or, a swingy but body-skimming long sleeved little black dress!’ Ditch tights for a pair of fantastic boots. A fur lined pair or an over-the-knee style will keep legs warm.
‘For hair and makeup, I’d still go natural, but maybe subtly play up your femininity with extra long lashes, pouty lips or contoured cheekbones,’ says Emily. Loose, bedhead curls or a cool “undone” topknot will finish this look.’ Happy holidays!
