Amazon’s Dash buttons made it easy to re-up on items with a push of a button, but now a firm has taken the service a step further – with a smart trash can.
Called GeniCan, this gadget sits on the side of a recycle bin or garbage can and scans the barcodes of empty packages as users throw them away.
Each item is then added to a digital grocery list and order automatically from your Amazon account using the Dash Replenish program.

‘GeniCan‘s mission is to simplify the lives of busy families,’ Rob Griffin, co-founder of GeniCan, said.
‘GeniCan creates shopping lists easily and automatically, saving them time and money.’
‘Dash Replenishment saves our customers even more time by automatically ordering items.’
‘Now they can reorder items directly from their garbage can and recycle bin at the perfect time: the moment the item is being disposed of.’
If you want to add ketchup to your shopping list, simply hold the barcode over the scan and GeniCan will log the item.
But when you need something that doesn’t have a barcode, like the empty roll of a paper towel, simply hold it over the device and tell it what the item is.
GeniCan is designed with an accompanied app that lets users tap into their list at any time and it will text you when the garbage is full.
